least one life. >> we opened up the door, it looked like a black current. >> reporter: that is what the first firefighters saw when they forced their way in to the home and the situation could have been worse if not for a driver who spotted the moke. >> had the person not drove by the fire would have grown. >> reporter: it took time to figure out where the fire was burning. >> you could see firefighters walking through the building. >> reporter: video taken by a neighbor shows firefighters searching and they were armed with help. this is a thermal imaging camera. he will put his hand against the wall. this is how sensitive it is. as he takes away his hand after a few seconds you can still see

his hand print on the wall. that saved time helping firefighters find the source of the fire and the two victims in the bedroom. >> as i opened up the door i found a downed female. she was conscious at the time. disoriented. she stated she needed help. looked for another victim and found another one at the time. >> reporter: he carried both victims through the smoke to waiting firefighters. >> they were holding her. she looked frail. >> reporter: he just kept etrying to rea-- trying to reassure her. both victims were taken to the hospital. they are dog was also rescued. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. in the last hour we received word the fire was determined accidental. in 2 minutes two girls from

finding effort into the incident. a task force will then begin its work and propose recommendations to ensure tolerant campus. one girl is 8, the other is 7. both go to the same elementary school and both of them were diagnosed with cancer in the same week. ktvu's ken pritchett tells us a story of a heart breaking coincidence that is topped only by the generosity of the community. >> reporter: it started with the 8-year-old on thanksgiving eve. >> bella was diagnosed with leukemia. >> then 7-year-old a few days later diagnosed with kidney cancer. both children students in pacifica. a grade apart. >> we are all just shocked. >> reporter: what the community did is remarkable. she is her friend.

her mom started this give forward page so people could help and boy, did they. >> we got a lot of donations for bella. $10,000 in two days. >> that is doubled as of today. another lola started a page for anaca. 11 grand. >> i am really amazed and blown away by the community really coming together to support both families. >> reporter: she says the money will help the families. >> i am overwhelmed. it is -- i break down and cry all the time. i can't believe the generosity. >> reporter: the families haven't yet met but the children are cloesin a sense -- are close in a sense. >> they are at the time same hospital, same floor. >> reporter: she just had a kidney removed.

she started years of chemootherapy. >> she is doing good but she is in a lot of pain. >> reporter: both will miss school this year but their progressinosis is good. two girls -- prognosis is good. two girls, diagnosed with cancer, a coincidence but the connection is both seem to benefit from a generous community. in pacifica, ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. >> more details now. cancer effects 14 out of 100,000 children in the united states. the most common are leukemia, lymphoma and brain cancer. treatment and cure rates vary widely depending on the cancer. our poll finds more californians approve of the
